Fisheries Minister Dr.Muhammad Shainee has delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of Ocean and Small States conference. The delegation of Maldives is headed by Fisheries Minister Dr.Muhammad Shainee.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the minister talked about the vastness of the sea that Maldives has to manage and talked about the challenges faced by Maldives in this regard.
Sea pollution is a huge problem in Maldives. Majority of the waste in the oceans come from other countries. This has adverse effects of fisheries and the tourism industry which forms the backbone of the Maldivian economy.
It is common in the UN to hold such conferences and talk but without any fruitful outcomes. At the opening ceremony of the conference, the secretary general of UN said that the oceans of the world has been polluted at a record scale.
