Opposition coalition has celebrated Mahloof’s release from jail. The opposition coalition held celebrations last night.
Speaking at the celebration, Mahloof said that even though he is free from prison after spending 11 months in prison, he still does not feel free. “Now I feel like I have been transferred from Maafushi jail to a bigger prison. The whole country is a prison. Passports of many politicians including Qasim Ibrahim are being withheld. Many politicians are still in jail. Also many are living in self-imposed asylum. Difference between Maafushi and Maldives is that in Maafushi we have to stay in cells while in the islands we can stay with our family” said Mahloof.
Mahloof said that he will not backdown until all politicians are freed, the courts are reformed and until all the politicians who are living abroad are able to come back to Maldives. In addition he said that the days he spent away from his wife and child were painful and he asked several times to be taken to his child. He also said that he learned valuable lessons during the time he spent in the prison.
Furthermore, he said that he regrets working against MDP members during the time he was with the government. He also thanked everyone who helped in different ways while he was in prison.
The celebration was attended by leader of JP Qasim Ibrahim and many senior opposition figures.
