WHO have stated that, Maldives spends the most on health sector in South Asia. According to WHO, Maldives spends morethan 9 percent of GDP on health-related expenses.
Speaking at the ceremony held last night to release the Maldives National Health Assessment 2014, the representative of WHO to Maldives Dr.Aruvindh Maathoor said that the report shows that the health related expenditures of the government has doubled in the past two years.
Dr.Maathoor noted that this significant increase is seen as a result of the work done by the government to develop the health sector. In addition, he said that it will always be challenging for the government to increase the budget. However, he said that, increasing the budget and spending it wisely will be beneficial in the future.
Health Minister Abdullah Nazim said that the state’s spending on the people when they are sick was 49 percent of the health expenditure. He said that however in 2014, the figure was at 29 percent, thus saving a lot of money from the state budget.
