Maldivian Blood Service MBS have stated that they need 150 units of blood per week and 9000 units per year.
In a statement released on the occasion of world blood donor’s day MBS stated that hospitals in Male’ needs 50-75 units of blood per week and health centers in the atolls need 10,000 units of blood per year.
The statement says that it is a vital component of the health sector that blood and blood transfusion equipment are readily available from institutions that provide health services. In addition, it says that safe and clean blood can be ensured only when the issue is lobbied at a national level.
Furthermore, the statement says that 33 percent of the blood donors in Maldives do it voluntarily. This year’s motto for world blood donor’s day is : “What can you do ? Donate blood – Donate blood now – Donate blood regularly”.
