Former President Maumoon have said that severing ties with Qatar is not a good move and it will be beneficial for Maldives to have ties with as many countries and NGOs as possible.
Speaking to the media after arriving to Maldives after staying abroad for more than 3 months, Maumoon said that no country in Asia has severed ties with Qatar except Maldives. He said that Islamic countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan did not severe ties with Qatar. Maumoon said that they did not cut off ties with Qatar, not because they support terrorism.
Maumoon said that Qatar always assisted Maldives and they have never done anything against Maldives. He said that hence he does not believe that Maldives should cut off ties with Qatar. Maumoon also said that relations with Commonwealth and Iran should not have been cut off as well.
Furthermore, Maumoon said that there is no benefit in isolationism and it will be beneficial by having relations with all countries and organizations that want to maintain relations with Maldives.
