20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China celebrated in Maldives
20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China celebrated in Maldives. It was celebrated with a photo exhibition held at Hotel Jen last night. The chief guest of the exhibition was Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Mr.Wang Fukang and bilateral secretory Ahmed Khaleel.

Speaking at the ceremony, the ambassador said that after Hong Kong was returned to China after 150 years of British rule, the Chinese government continues to allow people of Hong Kong to be administered autonomously.

He noted that Hong Kong has a free market economy and that it’s economy is developing fast. “The one country two system policy of China on Hong Kong is a policy accepted by the whole world. Under this policy Hong Kong is developing fast” said the ambassador.

In addition, the ambassador noted that the GDP of Hong Kong increased significantly in the past 20 years. “It increased from 1.37 trillion dollars to 2.49 trillion dollars. This is a 3.2 percent increase per year. This shows that Hong Kong is developing financially. The GDP per capita of Hong Kong is one of the highest in the world” said the ambassador.

Furthermore, he said that the policies implemented by China regarding Hong Kong is successful. “China does not only look at the financial development of Hong Kong but also prioritizes independence, safety and security of the people. Dividing Hong Kong will be destructive. China will always save Hong Kong from something like that” said the Ambassador.

Photos in the exhibition showed ongoing projects in Hong Kong and some development seen in the past 20 years. The exhibition was attended by diplomats in Maldives and various Chinese citizens living in Maldives.
