Sheikh Imran is detained with dangerous criminals – I am concerned: Mahloof

MP for Galolhu south constituency Ahmed Mahloof have said that Sheikh Imran is now kept in a cell with dangerous criminals and that he is concerned for Imran’s safety.

Speaking to the press near Male’ Jail, Mahloof said that Imran is being treated this way because of the statement he gave to the media. Mahloof talked about his experiences in jail. He said that during his time at the jail 5 inmates died and one of them died due to negligence of correctional services and that it should be investigated.

He said that correctional services does not abide by the laws made to administer prisons. In addition he said that the inmates are allowed to perform Friday prayer but he was not allowed to do so in 11 months. Furthermore, he said that inmates are able to go on Umra as well but he was not given this chance as well.

Mahloof said that many inmates fast as a Sunnah and they are forced to have Suhoor before 11:30however they are kept until 12:00 am to watch Maldivian Idol. Mahloof questioned about the priority given to religious duties in the prison. He called the government to change all political detainees to house arrest.
