Adhalath party has expressed concerns over how Sheikh Imran is being treated at prison. A statement released by AP says that he is being treated unfairly after he was changed to prison from house arrest this weekend.
The statement says that Imran is kept with dangerous criminals and that unit is unsafe for humans to stay. According to AP if Imran is kept in that cell his health conditions will worsen and since that he is a beloved scholar he should not be treated this way.
Imran was sentenced to 12 years in prison after a speech he gave in May Day protest of 2015. The state charged him for inciting violence and blamed him for the violence that happened on that day. Even high court upheld the ruling of the criminal court.
Imran’s lawyers have said that they will appeal the case at the Supreme Court. Previously Imran was kept in the special protection unit of Maafushi Jail. Politicians and other high profile people are kept in this unit.
