The government has decided to reduce fuel surcharge by 10 to 15 percent after the import duty of fuel was reduced by 5 percent.
Speaking to the press Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim said that they will announce the exact changes next week and price will change in Male’ and atolls. Thoriq said that this change will benefit ordinary people and businesses as well. In addition, he said that travelers and fishermen will benefit form it too.
He said that there will be no changes to tariff rates but there will be changes in fuel surcharge and it will reduce the price of electricity. “With the changes brought by the government, we can save 270 million Rufiyaa per year” said Thoriq.
With the changes, the government brought to duty of fuel, STO reduced the price of fuel significantly. Thoriq said that the government plans to change 30 percent of day time electricity usage to renewable sources and this will also reduce electricity prices in future.
Furthermore, he said that providing electricity at the cheapest possible rate is an important component of the president’s economic agenda.
