Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim have stated that the government is working to reduce the carbon footprint of Maldives.
Thoriq said that officials of ADB and technical experts are working it. He said that now they are working on a road map.
In addition the minister said that they are working on to reduce the carbon usage by 70 percent and the people will benefit financially and environmentally.
Speaking at the workshop titled “ Road map for low carbon development of energy sector in the Maldives” Thoriq said that the government is trying to use renewable energy resources for 30 percent of the day time electricity usage in all inhabited islands of Maldives before 2018.
In addition the minister said that 1.6 mega watts of renewable energy is produced in Addu and also they have contracted with a Chinese company to develop renewable sources in 26 islands of Hdh and Ha atoll. The minister said that there are projects to develop renewable energy sources in other islands as well.
Technical expert from abroad and senior officials from relevant authorities took part in the workshop.
