Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar have said that MNDF increased security within the premises of the parliament because the law mandates security services to do it.
Refuting the accusations made by the opposition saying that the army hijacked the parliament, the minister said that the opposition is spreading lies and security was increased because there was a possibility that activities that might threaten the national security might be conducted there.
In addition, the statement released by Defense Ministry states that they locked all gates of the parliament because the parliament requested them to do that. Furthermore, it says that while the secretariat of the parliament announced that there will be no parliament session from 24th to 31st of this month, the opposition tried to hold a session unlawfully, and MNDF took action because police declared the whole thing unlawful.
The statement further says that, the constitution mandates security services to protect the government, sovereignty of the nation, implement laws and provide assistance in case of emergency. It also stated that they will continue to take actions that are mandated by the law.
