The constitution has been attacked beyond repair,

Prominent lawyer Husnu Suood have said that the constitution which was ratified in 2008 ensured the rights of the people, but now it has been attacked beyond repair. “They have shot too many bullets to it. Now it is similar to a drainer with plenty of holes in it.”

Suood was a member of the parliament which drafted the constitution. He said that the people are not enjoying the constitution as they expected due to the amendments brought to it.

Suood said that when the constitution was being drafted the people were hoping for a system where powers of the state were separated and were hoping for an independent judiciary. He said that people also expected the judiciary to defend the constitution.

“After that people wanted to create independent institutions to prevent any government from turning autocratic. People wanted islands to be decentralized. They wanted to ensure that the courts helped people to ensure their rights” said Suood.

Suood said that today, there is no use of the constitution due to the amendments brought to the constitution by the government.
