Lawyer Hisaan Hussein have stated that the state and the EC could not explain the legal reasons why they declared the parliamentary seats of MP Ameeth and MP Latheef as vacant.
Speaking to the press after the hearing at Supreme Court today, Hisaan said that Ameeth completed all the procedures and submitted the documents to EC asking to be removed from PPM and it is the EC’s responsibility to remove Ameeth from PPM.
Hisaan said that the EC could not explain how they ‘removed’ Ameeth from PPM because Ameeth already left PPM and did not join the party again. Also, she said that the EC could not explain why EC failed to remove Ameeth’s name from PPM’s membership list and then removed him immediately when PPM requested to do so.
Regarding Latheef’s case Hisaan said that Latheef did not get elected with a PPM ticket and hence the EC could not explain how he would lose his seat based on the Supreme Court ruling.
Both Ameeth and Latheef’s hearing ended today and in the next session of the court, judges will issue a verdict.
