The parliament has approved Ahmed Naseer, Musthareege, K.Maafushi, as the new governor for Maldives Monetary Authority. His name was passed with the consensus of all 33 members who took part in today’s vote.
Naseer’s name was sent to the parliament committee on independent institutions today, while the president submitted his name on 20th of this month. Prior to sending his name, the president submitted former assistant governor of MMA, Neeza Imad’s name to the parliament. However her name was withdrawn and Naseer’s name was sent instead.
Naseer has a bachelors degree in economics and marketing, and a masters in economics. He was a also a state minister during MDP administration. Naseer worked in senior positions of MMA as well. He was also the CEO of CMDA.
MMA’s governor position became vacant after former governor Dr.Azima resigned because she moved to the US with her husband.
According to the MMA legislation, a governor should be appointed within 45 days of the position becoming vacant.
