The Department of Judicial Administration has lifted suspension on 16 lawyers who were suspended after protesting in front of the Supreme Court.
DJA made this decision after the lawyers appealed to the department. A total of 54 lawyers were suspended regarding the case and previously DJA lifted suspension of 13 lawyers.
DJA has faced criticism from international organizations regarding the suspensions. According to DJA they have finished investigating the cases of the lawyers and starting from today the lawyers can practice.
The lawyers whose suspension that got lifted includes Nooruh-Salaam Aboobakr a member of Qasim Ibrahim’s legal team, Ahmed Nazim Abdul Sattar and Safa Shareef a member of Mohammed Nasheed’s legal team.
Thirty-five lawyers signed a petition to the Supreme Court and the Civil Court asking to lift the suspension on the previous lawyers. However Civil Court threw out the case.
