Today marks the 5th year since prominent religious scholar and politician Dr.Afrasheem Ali was killed. He was killed on 1st October 2012.
At the time he was the member of parliament for Ungoofaaru constituency and the only religious scholar in the parliament. He played a key role in the drafting of penal code. He advocated against on including laws that are contrary to the teachings of Islam in the penal code.
Even though a lot of people believe that, one individual could not have carried out the heinous act of killing Dr.Afrasheem, only Humaam has been sentenced regarding this case. Both High Court and Supreme Court upheld the Criminal Court’s ruling to kill Humaam.
Humaam might be the only one who actively took part in killing Dr.Afrasheem, but it is unclear what his motives might be since Humaam and Dr.Afrasheem does not know each other personally.
Even though Police revealed that Dr.Afrasheem was killed after planning it well and that some people paid for it, police has so far not revealed any information about it.
A lot of people raise many questions regarding the matter. Especially because former President Mohammed Nasheed said that Afrasheem was killed by people who came from abroad and that they have left Maldives after killing Afrasheem.
Dr.Afrasheem had disputes with religious scholars. However, he held discussions with them and reached to resolutions regarding those matters. Since he was killed long after this happened, it cannot be said that his killing had anything to do with this.
Dr.Afrasheem’s family, and the people of Maldives are still waiting to know about who spent to kill Dr.Afrasheem.
