MP for Kinbidhoo constituency Abdullah Riyaz has been summoned to the police station today and a statement was obtained from him. According to the police, Riyaz was summoned because he has been spreading hatred against the police.
Riyaz went to the police station at 14:00 hours and he was kept there for four hours. Speaking to the press today, Riyaz said that the investigations on him are politically motivated and he believes that the investigation is against the law.
“I want to ensure the people of Maldives that I will never do anything unlawful. Even if I am arrested my determination will not change” said Riyaz
Speaking about the matter Riyaz’s lawyer Nooru Salaam Aboobakr said that the police referred to articles 533, 512 and 511 of penal code in their case against Riyaz. “None of these articles says anything about spreading lies and hatred. We asked them if they can investigate based on something that is not categorized as a criminal offence. We do not believe that the police gave an acceptable answer” said Nooru Salaam.
