Health Minister Abdullah Nazim have said that it will be a great comfort to be able to treat for cancer from Maldives.
He made this statement while speaking at the ceremony held today to inaugurate the oncology department of Hulhumale’ Hospital.
Health Minister said that cancer is among the top three reasons for mortality in the Maldives and also those who get cancer has to suffer from the disease for a long time.
“According to Aasandha statistics, even in 2016 alone people were referred abroad 1527 times to treat for cancer. In addition in the first 8 months of this year, more than 1100 people went abroad to treat for cancer through Aasandha” said the minister.
The minister said that the oncology department opened at Hulhumale’ Hospital will be able to treat cancer. “This is a step forward in the health sector of Maldives. In addition to chemotherapy, this center will conduct screenings and conduct awareness programs on life style habits which is an important part of cancer treatment” said the minister.
The oncology department will be managed by Hulhumale’ Hospital and Amritha Hospital of India. Five people can be treated simultaneously from this center. According to officials there will always be an oncologist at the hospital and Hulhumale’ Hospital will be connected to Amritha Hospital via a video link.
