President Yameen have said that there have been no researches done in Maldives to determine the cause of increase in crime rates in the Maldives, but the government has undertaken such a research.
Speaking at the meeting held last night with senior citizens, the president said that the government has formed a report after conducting a research to identify why the crime rates have been increasing since 2008. “We have handed the report to relevant authorities and then we will decide what to do next based on their findings. The government can do these things, but this is not enough” said the President.
President Yameen said that democracy is like a guide for many people, but there are many problems in following democracy. He said that everyone should accept that nothing will comes before the stability of the nation.
In addition he said that, while it is the senior citizens that are the most concerned if there is an increase in crime rates, they should have an active role in helping to solve these problems as well.
President Yameen said that democracy will come only when there is stability in the country and destabilizing the country is not democratic and that they are destructive acts. Furthermore, he said that the leaders of the country should always prioritize the stability of the country when they speak and should not encourage crime. “This is not a sign of democracy. They cannot raise vice to destroy institutions. They should not undermine the authority of the courts. They should not call to attack the police and the military. These are acts that will destroy the social cohesion” said the President.
In addition, he said that democracy is treating everyone fairly and justly. “Democracy is a system where everyone is treated justly” said the President.
