Gender Minister Zeneesha Shaheed Zaki have said that girls face various challenges just because they are girls.
She said that even though girls play a key role in developing the society, girls in various parts of the world face various challenges and this hinders the opportunities for girls to develop in many areas.
In addition, she said that even in the Maldives, girls face such challenges. She said the statistics on child abuse shows that most of the victims are girls. In addition she said that even in the job market, some people has the view that girls cannot work at the same level as boys.
She further said that, statistics show that most girls in Maldives chose medical field and teaching field. She said that girls are still less active in politics and tourism. She also said that women face more challenges after they marry and give birth to children.
