Today’s Friday Sermons stated that rulers in Islamic societies should be selected through dialogue and that is how the caliphs did it.
The sermon stated that the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) did not appoint a successor and he left it for the people to decide. The people selected Abu Bakr after discussing amongst themselves. However Abu Bakr advised the people to select Umar as the Caliph after him and the people accepted his advice.
Similarly, Umar came up with 6 names as possible rulers after him and the people selected a caliph based on his advice.
The sermon also stated the importance of obeying the rulers and gave Quranic evidence.
