India has always defended. Most people will remember India assistance regarding major crises like November 3 terrorist attack and 2014 water crisis. However, India has helped Maldives in other instances as well.
Many countries were reluctant to recognize the government of Dr.Waheed in 2012. However, that situation was diffused with an initiative taken by India. India was the first country to recognize Dr.Waheed’s government. As a result all other countries like USA and UK also recognized his government.
Even though there are some differences in opinion regarding several matters, between in India and Maldives, leaders of both nations know that, this cannot mean both countries can cut off ties.
Times of India have said that in January a high level delegation from India will visit Maldives to diffuse the situation. However, Indian Foreign Ministry has not yet revealed any information about the visit. Also, Miadhu has learnt that no information about the visit has been provided to the Indian High Commission in the Maldives as well.
Tensions escalated when a Maldivian newspaper accused India of being the greatest enemy. Some Indian commentators have said that the government should apologize India and some suspected that the government was behind the publication. However, President Yameen has revealed that it had nothing to do with the government.
President Yameen also asked media to refrain in doing anything that will worsen the relations between Maldives and India. He said that such acts are not in the best interest of the state. President also said that India is a close ally and that the relations will be strengthened.
