There are various drinks for children in the Maldivian market. People often do not check the amount of added sugar in such drinks.
Milo is a famous drink in Maldives. Nestle, the parent company of Milo has conducted tests and submitted the results to FDA showing how much sucrose a packet of Milo contains. The tests show that a packet of Milo contains less than 2 teaspoons of sucrose.
FDA says that the law does not oblige to submit details of any food product to them in this manner, but they have tested some products and that the results have been classified.
Nestle does not want to classify this information. Hence they have submitted this information on their own because that is how they can earn the trust of the customer.
Even FDA have announced that the sucrose level in Milo is less than 2 tea spoons. “Sucrose level in a packet of Milo is less than 2 teaspoons. However when other content in the drink are added the amount of sugar is around 4 teaspoons” stated FDA.
It is not possible to reduce the level of sugar when milk is included in the drink. What can be reduced is the added sugar. The added sugar in Milo is less than all other such drinks in the market. Research shows that milk is important for growth and removing sugar from milk will harm children.
Some people try to show that milo is a harmful drink for children. People only see Milo from shops and the details of the product is well known to everyone. People do not see other such drinks which the sugar level is not even known.
It is not healthy to give drinks with high sugar level to children. However many parents give products like ice cream, jugo and milk shake without thinking about sugar.
