Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has requested to conduct his terror trial in absentia.
Maumoon is being charged with terrorism for planning to overthrow the government. He was arrested on 5th February 2018.
Maumoon’s lawyer Mohammed Faisal sent a letter to the court requesting to conduct his trial in absentia because Maumoon’s ill health does not allow him to travel by sea.
The letter states that it is a constitutional right to conduct his trial while he is present, but he has forfeited the right and requested to conduct it with his lawyers only.
