Japan Provides 13.9 million MRf for Urgent Restoration of Water Desalinization Facility in Male

The Government of Japan approved over 13.9 million Maldivian Rufiyaas (US$ 903,000) to be financed through the “Counterpart Fund under Japan’s KR Grant Aid” for “Enhancing the Water Supply in Male´ City”.


Japanese Embassy has said Japan Funded the aid, having been concerned with the severe water shortage in Male´, Maldives caused by breakdown of the island’s only water desalinization facility, and understanding the urgency to restore the facility.


This fund will be utilized to kick start urgent repairs to the desalinization plant, so that it will recover its full function in providing uninterrupted water supply to the people of Male´. While recognizing the need for longer-term measures, Japan hopes that this immediate measure would serve to restore normalcy soon, where the people of Male´ would have stable access to clean drinking water.

Maldivian Government has said the estimated loss is around 20 million US Dollars.
