Bilehdhoo constituency MP Ahmed Mubeen has said that the government should take responsibility for the vagueness of the role of councils even when the councils have been elected for the second time under the local governance act.

Speaking at the Peoples’ Majlis, Mubeen said that the amendment to the article 110 of the local governance act should be submitted within six months of the ratification of the act. He said that it is saddening that there have been made no amendments despite years have been passed since the ratification of the act.

“I am very saddened. Councils have been elected for a second term. However their role has not been clarified to them,” he said.

Mubeen said that because of this the people are not able to get the sweetness of these constitutional positions.

“We always here of talks on strengthening the councils. Councils have power however they have no authority to allocate land plots to those in need. They have to make requests to the housing ministry. They have to make requests to the government. They have to beg the government,” he said.
