International Yoga Day to be celebrated in Maldives

Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Rajiv Shahare has stated that the Commission was working to ensure that the celebrations for the International Yoga Day would be held successfully in the Maldives.

The Commissioner made the statement speaking in a special ceremony held in Indian Cultural Center located at Ma. Vavathi.

Ambassador Shahare stated that the initiative to hold an International Yoga Day was prioneered by India and that the motion put forward by India to the United Nations was well received by the member nations.

“The initiative was the brain child of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He announced the initiative in last years’s UN General Assembly. Yoga is an ancient practice, accepted world over, practiced by many. That’s why the Prime Minister wished to celebrate this day across the globe,” Shahare said.

Rajiv Shahare stated that the resolution to hold an International Yoga Day was supported by 177 nations and that this amount was astounding. He added that this was an indication of the support to host such a day.

Ambassador Shahare stated that International Yoga Day will be marked annually on 21st June. He assured that even though this year’s International Yoga Day falls in the month of Ramadan, the planned activities for the day, will take it into account.

The planned activities for the day will kick off at 8.30 am and the main feature of the day will take place in Artificial Beach area at 9.30 pm.

“All the global activities for the Day will take place at the same time across the globe. The Prime Minister has requested as such,” Ambassador said.

Shahare stated that activities will be held in Billabong School and Kalaafaanu School in Male’, Muhyiddin School in Vilingili and in Hulhumale’. Additionally, Diabetic Center has also expressed their interest in taking part in the activities. Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) is also set to take part in the official celebrations of the day.

Ambassador Shahare added that yoga was beneficial to diabetics and that it has been proven that with continuous practice, diabetic patients have been spared from the agony of using insulin. He stated that yoga was especially beneficial to the internal systems as well.

He stated that yoga was also popular amongst Maldivians. Shahare stated that the Cultural Center had katakh dance, tabla and yoga classes, with yoga classes being the most popular.

“Over 2400 students have learnt yoga from the Center. They are spreading yoga across the Maldives and teaching people of the benefits and skill of the practice,” Shahare said.

A yoga demonstration was held in the ceremony.
