Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdullah has been transferred back to Dhoonidhoo jail, less than 24 hours after his transfer to home.

He was transferred back after a session in Court.

Sheikh Imran’s lawyers reported that he was summoned to Court yesterday evening around 5.00pm for the second hearing of the case against him and that the presiding Judge had said so. His lawyer also reported that the session had proceeded with the sole remaining Judge of the bench that was reviewing his case.

In the hearing the Judge had decreed that his presence alone was sufficient for the case. The Judge added that he was respectful of the Criminal Court Chief Judge’s ruling to send transfer Sheikh Imran to house arrest. However, he stated that this was not established procedure and ordered the Sheikh to be transferred back to jail.

Lawyer Ali Zahir stated that the Judge had said that Sheikh Imran was being held in detention on the basis of an intelligence report issued by the Police. However, he added that the nature of some intelligence reports hamper the quest for justice.

Ali Zahir had questioned on the location of detention to which the state lawyers replied that this was the procedure under the parole laws. He had stated that the suspects were always kept in remand centers as per the parole laws and that as Maafushi Jail was not a remand center the Sheikh cannot be held there.

Ali Zahir reported that the state lawyers were unable to offer a rebuttal. He added that neither the Sheikh’s lawyers nor the state lawyers were aware of where Imran was being kept.

Ali Zahir stated that the State had pressed terror charges on Sheikh Imran regarding the May Day events. He noted that Imran had only spoken for the cause and that persons who had committed larger crimes were granted more reprieves. Imran has denied the charges.

Sheikh Imran had met many during his brief house arrest and reportedly told them that he would not engage in any political activities until his trial was concluded. The Sheikh had also reportedly told them he was not aware when his house arrest will come to an end and urged all to make prayers for the state of the nation.
