President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has ratified the Fifth Amendment to the Employment Act (Act No. 2/2008). The amendment bill was passed by the parliament on Wednesday, 17th August 2016, at the seventeenth sitting of the second session of the People’s Majlis. On ratification, the Act has now been published on the Government Gazette.

The amendment to the Employment Act further requires employers of expatriates, with valid work permits, to exercise added responsibility in paying wages and outlines actions to be taken in instances of failure to do so.

Additionally the change accommodates complaint handling procedures in order to make employers more accountable while also requiring a 3% remittance tax from wages sent abroad by expatriate employees.
