Board member of STO, Aishath Rafiyya have said that with the changes in government subsidy policy, those who deserve the subsidies will benefit more because they will receive money than the requirement.

Speaking at a press conference held by MDA, Rafiyya who is also a deputy president of MDA said that even STO faced some challenges due to the reduction of subsidies. However, she said that they paid special attention to the matter to ensure the needy don’t have to suffer and because of that everything is going on smoothly now.

Rafiyya said that if we look into the average amount spent by households on staple food items, only around 160 Rufiyaa will be spent extra on new staple prices, with the changes in subsidy policy. She said that however, the government has decided to give 240 Rufiyaa to low income families and thus they will actually benefit from this policy.

Rafiyya said that the opposition is actually talking about subsidies without taking these things into consideration and are trying to misinform the public.

Government said that they are giving subsidies to those who deserve it after conducting studies on the needs of low income households and hence, these families will not have additional burden because of this policy.

However, the greatest concern of the people is that the government increased tax and decreased subsidies without increasing the salaries of civil servants as they did with political appointees and staffs of independent institutions.
