National Human Rights Framework of Maldives has been released. This framework was published by the Attorney General’s office in coordination with UN and some other organizations.

In a ceremony held tonight, Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed officially released the framework.

Speaking at the ceremony, the country representative of UNFPA in Maldives, praised the work done by Maldives to protect and promote human rights both home and abroad. The representative also noted the assistance by the government to UN in Maldives.

Attorney General Muhammad Anil said that the constitution of the Maldives ensures human rights at a wide range. He said that however the constitution does not explain how to acquire the rights. With this framework, these things can be identified as well according to the AG.

Anil said that holding public gathering is a human right but many countries have mechanisms to ensure that when one group uses this right, it does not violate the right of others. “Disturbing people in the middle of the night by large groups is considered as a human right by some. But this violates the right of others. That is why some laws had to be made and this framework is needed” said Anil.

He assured that Maldives will always work to promote and ensure human rights
