No government that arrested Qasim Ibrahim has been able to get re-elected. Qasim was first arrested in 2004 regarding the riots of August 12-13. He was freed after the problems the country faced during the tsunami.

The then government, failed in the 2008 elections.

The government of Nasheed which assumed office with the backing of Qasim, arrested Qasim as well. At that time also he was suspected of bribing the parliament members.

On 7th February 2012, Qasim resigned. Former Home Minister Umar Naseer tweeted stating that no government that ever arrested Qasim has been re-elected.

Umar Naseer is vocal against the arrest of Qasim. Umar described arresting Qasim as signing the political death certificate.
