Kidney diseases are at a dangerous level in Maldives : Health Minister

Health Minister Abdullah Nazim have said that 60 kidney transplants have be done since the government introduced unlimited Aasandha. He said that this shows that kidney diseases have a high prevalence rate in Maldives.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Villimale’ hospital to inaugurate the dialysis center of the hospital, the minister said that the state is taking care of sick people. Minister Nazim said that 60 kidney transplants were done abroad and numerous amount of money was spent on these procedures.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr.Ali Lateef of IGMH said that once two kidneys fail the only solution is doing a transplant. He said that often the biggest challenge is getting a donor. He said that even if the patient goes abroad, the kidney transplant can be done only when a relative donates the kidney.

Dr.Ali Lateef said that doctors from IGMH will also visit the Villimale’ hospital and hence patients will not have to go to Male’ every time.
