Deputy Leader of JP, Abdullah Riyaz have said that the tape recorder case proves that the privileges guaranteed by the law for the lawyer-client meetings does not exist anymore. Riyaz made this statement when HRCM met with him today.

Speaking about Riyaz’s meeting with HRCM, JP stated that Riyaz also noted that he was detained in violation with the parliamentary privileges act. He said that he was informed about the charges he is facing 12 days after he was detained. In addition he noted that he has not been taken to parliamentary sittings even though the parliamentary privileges act states that those who are detained must be taken to parliamentary sittings.

Riyaz also noted the unavailability of clean drinking water and stated that he was being detained without any evidence and for political reasons. According to JP, Riyaz requested HRCM to work for his release.

Officials of HRCM stated that they will look into the matters and noted that some of the things highlighted by Riyaz are things which they have already recommended the authorities to reform. According to JP, an HRCM member told Riyaz that if Police does not comply with their orders they will go to the court as well.
