Dr.Niyaz the Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates has been appointed as the representative for International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

In a ceremony held at the headquarters of IRENA, Dr.Niyaz presented his credentials to the director general of IRENA Franceso La Camera.

IRENA was formed in 2009 and Maldives has been a member since then. However this is the first time Maldives appointed a representative to the organization. The organization has 160 countries and the European Union as members.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid tweeted congratulating Dr.Niyaz and stated that this will help Maldives to use renewable energy sources. He also stated that one of the main pillars of President Solih’s foreign policy is climate diplomacy.

While Dr.Niyaz has been appointed as the Maldivian representative to IRENA, the parliament has given approval to the non-resident ambassadors to Oman and Bahrain.
