Parliament members have stated that it is shameful that the biggest corruption scandal in the Maldives happened with the assistance of Bank of Maldives and Maldives Monetary Authority. 

Speaking at the parliament today MP Abdullah Yauqoob said that since BML and MMA are state institutions, this corruption scandal affected the whole state. He said that all the staff who took part in the corruption should be punished. 

Members noted that the whistleblower Qasim Abdul Kareem who first brought the matter to the attention of the public is a hero. He was a staff of BML, but he was dismissed after he leaked bank statements of SOF the company which laundered embezzled funds. The MPs called to reinstate Qasim’s position at the bank and to compensate him. 

BML’s had a British citizen as the CEO when the corruption scandal happened. However he retired and left Maldives.
