Maldives Airports Company has earned 193 million Rufiyaa as profit in the first quarter of this year and aims to earn 2 billion Rufiyaa by the end of this year.

MACL earned MVR 572 million as revenue in the first quarter and holds the record for the most profitable state-owned company. The company expects to earn MVR 2 billion as profit by the end of this year.

Since MACL has started using the new apron at Velana International Airport, which is developed to international standards, the airport operations will be more efficient and hence can serve more airlines which will increase its revenue.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the airport was the leasing of the airport to India’s GMR. They never had any plans to upgrade the runway of the airport, which means if they ran it, the airport could not have catered for large aircrafts.
