President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reiterated that this administration will stand steadfast in its commitment to promote democracy, strengthen the rule of law and respect human rights and fundamental freedoms. He made these remarks in his message to all Maldivian citizens on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, marked today.

Wishing the citizens of the Maldives on the occasion, the President said that we must work harder to strengthen democratic institutions, encourage greater citizen participation and seek to resolve our differences through dialogue and debate.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Democracy is 'Participation.' Highlighting on the theme, the President stressed that the term 'democracy' denotes a government of the people, by the people and for the people. He noted that the past few years have demonstrated the virtues of people’s participation.

In this regard, President Solih recalled how violation of the rights of many had altered the stability of the nation over the past few years, and how promoting the right to active, substantive and meaningful participation in democracy has changed the scenario. Speaking further on the theme, the President said that democracy is built upon a foundation of inclusion, equal treatment and participation. He highlighted that democracy is the fundamental building block for peace, sustainable development and human rights.

Moving forward, President Solih said the next step for this administration is to ensure and protect the rights enshrined in the Constitution. He stressed that the most significant rights were the right to life, liberty, and personal security; the right to equality before the law; the right to a fair trial; and the right to work.

Continuing his message, the President further stated that strengthening democracy will ensure prosperity and realise the human potential of every nation and community; when supported as per their faith, culture and traditions.

The International Day of Democracy is celebrated around the world on 15th September each year.
