President hoists National flag to mark National Day

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has hoisted the National flag of Maldives at the ceremony to mark the occassion of the National Day.

The flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the Republic Square at 0600 hours, early on Tuesday morning. Upon his arrival to the location, the President was greeted by the Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla. Following the hoisting of the national flag, a special dua was recited by the Imam of Masjid-al-Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam.

Vice President Faisal Naseem and other senior government officials attended the ceremony.

National Day is celebrated on the 1st day of Rabi' al-awwal every year. The day is marked to commemorate the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, ending the 15 year-long Portuguese occupation of the Maldives in 1573.
