The Criminal Court of the Maldives has decided to review the procedures on live telecasting trials held at the court.
A statement issued by the court today states that they have decided to review the procedures and until then no trials will be televised. At the moment only former President Yameen’s trial is being televised. The court decided that, existing cases which are being televised will be televised only if both the prosecution and the defendant agrees to do that.
The criminal court gave many reasons for not televising the cases. They stated that televising cases forms a certain public opinion about the cases, and it creates hatred in the society.
So far President Yameen’s trial is the only case to be ever televised in the Maldives.
