The Criminal Court has sentenced former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyom to 5 years in jail after they found him guilty of the money laundering charges filed against him by the state.
In addition to the jail sentence he was also fined with 5 million dollars and was asked to pay the amount to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority in 6 months.
The former president’s legal team has stated that they will appeal this verdict at the High Court of the Maldives as soon as possible and that today’s verdict was not in accordance with Islamic shariah and laws of Maldives.
At the moment President Yameen in in Male’ jail. He will undergo some medical tests before he is transferred to Maafushi Jail.
