Some Maldivian businesses have decided to import onions from Turkey after India decided to increase the price of onion.

Speaking to Miadhu News a leading Maldivian businessman said that in India the price of one ton of onion is 1800 dollars and hence to sell it in Maldives it would cost at least MVR 40 per kilograms.

“So the agent is saying that Maldivian businesses are not buying onions from India, even the ones who has their boats in Indian harbor at the moment. When we asked to send 10 tons they are saying its not possible to send 10 tons because the quantity is too low”

He said that shipments from Turkey is on the way and that they will be able to sell one kilogram for MVR 25.

“We can get from Pakistan for 1000 USD. That is 800 dollars cheaper than India, but since there is not direct shipping, we have to transit through Colombo. Also we have to bring through reefer containers. There are no facilities here in Maldives” said the business man.
