Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hameed stated that there are 1400 people in Maldivians who adhere to extreme religious beliefs and who would not hesitate to kill.
He made this statement while speaking at the “Viavethi Rajje” conference. He asked the local councils to cooperate with the police to deal with extremism. These statistics publicized by Hameedh today were kept as confidential information before.
Some information publicized by the commissioner of police today:
- 423 people tried to go to Syria from Maldives
- Out of them 173 people managed to enter Syria
- There are 59 Maldivians in Syria. Most are children and women. There are only 4 men who are in a situation to be taken back to Maldives
- There are 1400 people who are adherent of extremist beliefs
In addition he CP said that there are people who returned from Syria and Afghanistan and are now trying to spread that ideology in Maldives.
He said that this ideology is spreading fast in some islands and it is a serious concern as the people are also in danger.
