President Yameen’s lawyers have stated that the Prosecutor General requesting for a warrant to seize the money in the former president’s bank account will obstruct his right to appeal.
A press statement by his lawyers state that, the whole point of an appeal procedure is to review the judicial decision made in the lower court and hence requesting to seize funds in the former president’s account will deny him of various rights guaranteed to him by the constitution.
In addition his lawyers also expressed concern on twitter. Adam Shameem who is a member of President Yameen’s legal team stated that even in the initial proceedings at the Criminal Court, the state did not request to seize the money and even the court verdict has no such order.
Lawyer Siyaz who is another member of President Yameen’s legal team, also noted that the criminal court verdict convicting former President Yameen does not order to seize the money his in account. He said that the PG making such a request is equivalent to amending the court verdict. He said that it is unlawful.
The state charged President Yameen with money laundering and he was convicted on 27th November. The court ordered to jail him for 5 years and slapped a fine of 5 million dollars.
