Charges have been pressed against former State Minister at the Housing Ministry Akram Kamaludeen and three other senior officials of the ministry at that time, for allegedly providing undue benefits to certain parties through the
‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ Housing scheme. The other three officials are Senior Executive Mohamed Arif , Senior Executive Lirqaam Waheed and Director General Ahmed Vishaan Naseem.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said in a statement that the case was
sent to the Prosecuter General’s Office as evidence gathered during the
investigation conducted jointly by the commission and the Maldives Police
Service (MPS) showed that they had unfairly included some individuals in the
list of flats recipients in the first round of the Gedhoruveriyaa Housing Scheme, by abusing the power of the post they held.
ACC says in addition to these allegations, joint investigations are continuing into some other additional offenses suspected to have been committed by those involved in the case.
Gedhoruveriyaa was a housing scheme announced by the previous government, under which 4,000 housing flats were built. The list of recipients was released on 4 November 2023, shortly before the end of that administration, following which there were hundreds of complaints.
The current administration reviewed the list but recipients are still complaining of discrepancies and suspected favors.
