Maldives has called for measures to overcome challenges faced by the fisheries industry of small island nations like the Maldives.

The appeal was made by State Minister at the Ministry Fisheries and Ocean Resources Aminah Hussain Shareef while speaking at a meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations Ocean Conference United Nations Ocean Conference 2025, currently taking place in Nice, France.

Addressing the meeting organized by International Pole and Line Foundation, Ms. Shareef also pointed out that the country has many market-access challenges as well, and called for measures to overcome the problem.

Highlighting how the Maldives had advocated hard for the different Fishery Certificates at IOTC, State Minister stated the task must not remain the responsibility of developing small island nations alone.

Welcoming the measures taken by FAO to amend Ecolabeling Guidelines, State Minister Aminah Hussain Shareef said the Maldives currently needs a just, and transparent, certification system drawn-up by the fishermen, for the fishermen. She said such a system should embody the small and medium fishery activities as well.
