State Electric Company STELCO says it has been working non stop under its pledge to support President Muizzu’s One Million Tree Program, an initiative which reflects government’s commitment to safeguarding the Maldives’ vital ecosystems and combating the impacts of climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.
STELCO says its staff in all the islands where they operate the power houses, have been engaged in tree-planting activities in all week-ends, and they are confident they can meet their own pledge of 5000,000 trees.
In a message posted in X by the Managing Director of STELCO Hussain Fahmy said, staff of STELCO worked during this weekend as well, to plant more trees on the outer island. And they are reported to be planting trees that would be of benefit to the people. STELCO is also providing saplings and seedlings to those interested in tree-planting.
STELCO says its staff will also monitor the trees thus planted, and also document and record their progress, to ensure they grow-out to its full potential.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu launched the major initiative to plant five million trees across the Maldives on 5th June 2024 under the program to mark World Enviornment day. This ambitious program, which was adopted during the COP28 conference has also been incorporated as a major pledge of the government.
