The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, has delivered his speech at the opening ceremony of the 9th China-South Asia Exposition and Cooperation Forum.
In his speech Deputy Speaker Nazim reaffirmed the strong partnership the Maldives enjoys with China, describing it as one founded on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment towards peace.
He emphasized on the strong economic ties between the two countries, and highlighted the success of China's Belt and Road Initiative projects implemented in the Maldives. He also noted China’s assistance in the construction of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and the new runway at Velana International Airport.
The Deputy Speaker also spoke on ongoing efforts by the government to address the challenges posed by climate change and the policies being formulated in this regard.
In his speech, Nazim also spoke on the impact of global instability and ongoing conflicts on the economies of countries like the Maldives. He offered recommendations on how regional countries can work together to formulate policies, maintain economic ties and pursue sustainable development in order to promote economic development.
This year’s event is held under the slogan “Solidarity and Cooperation for Common Development”, and will go on from 19 to 24 June.
Taking place at the Kunming Dianchi International Convention and Exhibition Center, the Expo and Forum has attracted representatives from 73 countries, regions, and international organizations, as well as more than 2,500 enterprises.
The event serves as a key platform for promoting regional economic and trade cooperation, cultural exchange, and mutual development, featuring representation from countries including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Kingdom of Bhutan, the Maldives, and Afghanistan.
Through exhibitions, business forums, and cultural showcases, the expo is helping to deepen ties across the region while promoting the values of peace, inclusiveness, and connectivity.
