Work on the new powerhouse in the island of Dhiffushi is nearing completion. Accordingly major works on the modern-style Control Room and some other important sections have now been completed.
Giving details about the project Station Manager Hussain Shafiu disclosed that physical work on the powerhouse was launched immediately after the foundation was laid in June 2024.He said with speedy nonstop work, the full structure of the building was completed within the past 8 months or so. Shafiu said some hinderance was caused due to unavailability of some material, but later went on to even build own fuel storage tanks.
Station Manager Hussain Shafiu said currently change-over work is in progress, and that new engines have already been installed and tested. At present only some finishing work on the new station remains.
The present power capacity in Diffushi Powerhouse is 2,200 Kilowatts. But the newly built powerhouse will have seven Megawatts capacity, which is three times the present capacity.
Shafiu said the island did not experience any power shortages or disruptions even with the previous power supply. But a new powerhouse is constructed under government plan to move powerhouses from residential areas, and also as the old place was having some space restrictions.
The new power house is built on a 30,000squarefoot area, which also caters to some needs like staff accommodation. The new building has few 2 room accommodation units, staff recreation area as well as basic amenities like kitchen, prayer room and coffee corners.
