Supreme Court is to conduct a fresh hearing of the suomoto case against Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) today.

The last hearings of the case was held last September. The case was taken up by Supreme Court on its own accord, citing that the Commission’s report to UN Human Rights Council had contained erroneous reports on the state of the country’s judiciary.

The hearings are to commence at 2.00 pm.

It has to be noted that the term of some of the members of the Commission is to expire soon. President Abdullah Yameen had issued fresh nominations for the vacancies and the nominations had been sent to the Parliament.
Supreme Court had issued a suomoto case against Elections Commission (EC) as well. Court had decreed that the Commission President FuadThaufeeq and Deputy President Hassan Fayaz had effectively lost their positions.

Fuad earned an additional six months in jail, however the sentence has been delayed for three years. Supreme Court ruling stated that if Fuad did not commit any crimes during that period, his sentence would be pardoned.
